How was Bar 97's Golf Outing at Cabopino? A Recap of the Day's Events

The sun shone brightly ( eventually ) on the day Bar 97 members gathered for a much-anticipated golf outing at the stunning Cabopino Golf Club. This event united golf lovers and casual players for a day of friendly competition and relaxation. The lush greens and breathtaking views promised unforgettable moments ahead.

The buzz of anticipation was not quite electric as participants checked in, mainly because it had rained all morning and visibility was poor!. Cabopino Golf Club is well-known for its challenging course, complemented by spectacular views of rolling hills and the Mediterranean Sea. The combination of great golfing conditions and a stunning backdrop set the stage for an exciting outing.

The Players' Arrival

As players trickled in, there was an air of uncertainty, would we get out on time or even get out at all. There was a degree of anticipation as members and guests were informed that the "no buggies on fairways" rule was in force, several players having issues with injuries etc. So lots of coffee was the order of the day....or in the case of Ricky, a nice pint of ale!

This friendly atmosphere inspired a spirit of good sportsmanship that carried throughout the day, it epitomizes what we are about....good people enjoying the company.

The Tournament Format

The outing adopted a friendly tournament format, i.e a Texas Scramble where players formed teams based on fairly equal skill levels. This setup ensured everyone felt included and had a chance to contribute.

The format encouraged playful banter and friendly rivalries. Players familiar with the course offered valuable insights about the best spots to hit and the trickiest holes to conquer. For instance, knowing how to avoid the water hazards on hole 14 and where to place your tee shot and second shot could save a stroke or two.

The Golf Course Experience

Teeing off on the first hole is always a nervous occasion, waterproofs on and most of us hitting "cold" as it were, a couple of holes later we were all in Summer gear as the sun burst through and blessed us all day. Cabopino Golf Course offered both challenges and rewards. With 18 holes, each featuring unique landscapes and challenges, players navigated water hazards and strategically placed bunkers, well that was the master plan anyway...didn't always work out that way.

The course conditions were great considering the weather we had, and the mild breeze added just the right touch of challenge.

Highlights of the Day

As usual we held a closest to the pin contests: 7th was won by Mark who must have hit a great shot as Sandra was within a few feet herself; 13th was won by Adam who must have a remote control in his bag....always among the prizes ( Mr Handicap Sec...take note ); 15th was won by Roger after Mike had been leading, I have to say that 3 of us in our group, put the ball over the pin but just a fraction long to hold the green. Bugger!

The Post-Game Gathering

As the final putts were made and scores calculated, everyone headed to Bar 97, our regular watering hole for a lively post-game gathering. For most of us this is the best part of the day, especially if you've had a "toughie",lots of laughs, making fun of each other and generally enjoying the company. The curry was excellent by the way.

Nearest the pin prizes were sponsored by Bar 97, so a great big thank you guys.

Before the team prizes were announced we had 2 very special presentations: first of all, Johnny H presented Clare with a memento plus a couple of bottles of cava ( with glasses)for all the hard work she had done as Captain, over the past 15 months or so...thanks for all that Clare. Following on, I had the privilege of presenting Adam with a certificate for his "hole in one" which he achieved at Miraflores, on the 11th in Oct 2023! The first and only member to manage that. Sorry for the delay mate...better late than never, enjoy your cava as well.

Reflections and Takeaways

This golf outing was about more than just a game; it was about building community among Bar 97 members. It reminded everyone of the value in stepping away from daily routines to embrace nature, engage in friendly competition, and cultivate lasting relationships.

Member feedback was overwhelmingly positive, one thing I would point out is to get your name down nice and early so as not to be disappointed. For myself, this was part of a learning curve and I hope I can build on this experience ( once I've recovered )!

Looking Ahead

I would say the day was a success, everyone seemed to enjoy it and we look forward to our next excursion at Alhaurin G.C, last Sat in March.

We are booked for 24 places at the moment, I notice on their website that there is another flight available directly behind us, so would be happy to try and get an extra slot, depending on the level of interest from you guys. Please give me some sort of feedback ASAP.

Onwards and upwards.........Taff
